I always wondered what it was about end of the world predictions that people find so exciting.

Is it the same dynamics at work as children anticipating school being called off because of snow?

When I was 7 or 8 in Singapore, we used to experience occasional black outs. Singapore in the mid 1980s was a lot more ramshackle than what you see today.

I used to love blackouts, thinking that it was a heaven sent excuse not to do my homework. You could hear all the kids roar in my tower block when the lights went out.

Of course, my dear mother would always disappoint me by whipping out a candle. Nothing to do but sigh and stick my nose back in the books.

Since 1980, the end of the world was supposed to have arrived on at least 50 different occasions, as predicted by various authorities such as Nostradamus, Jehovah's witnesses, the Southern Baptists, the Seventh Day Adventists, Reverend Moon, the Nation of Islam, the Theosophists, celebrated psychic Edward Cayce, Y2k experts, and even Sir Isaac Newton.

That's an average of 1.6 end of the worlds, every year.

My prediction is that I'll live to see many more such predictions

As for current affairs, Berlusconi, oy ve. That's the true apocalypse right there.
