Noah Webster

Sir,

You ask, "Why would anyone willingly subject himself or herself to such reputational and professional risk?"

The answer is obvious: It's the money.

According to Stephenson, Harwood & Lo, Hang Seng Index companies paid their NEDs average annual remuneration of HK$339,000 in 2007, excluding share options.

If an NED were to string together four of these appointments, then that would exceed HK$110,000 per month, more than enough to cover the monthly cash flow of most executives in Hong Kong who own their flats free and clear. (And let's not forget about those potentially lucrative share options!)

Of course, ego, networking, information flow, and boredom are contributing motivational factors as well, but it's mainly about the money.

Jeremy

Board membership is still too much a closed shop....there needs to be a bigger population of NED's
