looks like you did your trip just before xinjiang's spasm of unstability. lucky you.

was planning a trip to western china this fall but looks like postponement's imminent. gorgeous part of the world, closest i got was gilgit years back

most books on china arent worth the paper they are printed on. sorting out the wheat from the chaff...dennis bloodworth's Chinese Machiavelli and bertrand russell's problem of china have stood the test of time. highly recommended, along with peter fleming's news from tartary.

for all her shortcomings, the british empire and her best mandarins/thinkers churned out analyses that makes the huntingtons and fukuyamas of our time look like 4th rate charlatans.
